New Morning Market is honored to once again be partnering with Meals on Wheels of Western CT for their annual campaign benefiting Meals on Wheels clients. The fundraiser, “Buy a Wheel for Meals on Wheels”, will run through the month of March 2021.
Sponsored by New Opportunities, Inc. and partially funded by the Western Connecticut Area Agency on Aging, this area’s Meals on Wheels Program delivers 2 meals each day to homebound seniors and pet food to their faithful animal companions.
Since the onset of COVID 19, the demand for home delivered meals has increased dramatically. The closing of Senior Centers and meal sites shifted more people to Meals on Wheels as seniors at risk quarantined to remain safe and distanced. Meals on Wheels immediately went into action providing over 26,000 frozen meals in addition to the program’s regular deliveries in an effort to keep seniors safe in their own home. Without missing a day, during COVID 19, Meals on Wheels provided 550,000 home delivered meals to over 1,800 homebound seniors in the greater Waterbury and Danbury regions! In addition, Meals on Wheels provided over 30,000 pounds of pet food and cat litter to 200 cats and dogs who faithfully provide love and companionship to our Meals on Wheels recipients.
“This fundraiser is especially important this year because the program has a waiting list of over 125 seniors who are unable to get home delivered meal services” said Lisa LaBonte, Senior Nutrition Services Interim Director. “It is particularly difficult as the people on the waiting list are frail and at high-risk of contracting COVID 19 and Meals on Wheels is unable to be of assistance when they are most in need.”
