Two Coyotes Wilderness School is a nonprofit mentoring organization that connects people to nature, community, and self. We design interdisciplinary programs that provide a dynamic environment for students to face challenges, engage their natural curiosity, and cultivate an intrinsic love for learning that they bring back into the classroom and the rest of their lives.
Our mission is more than youth environmental education. We believe nature connection is our birthright, and that catching frogs, muddy knees, and exploring wild places are essential to growing up strong and healthy. We believe long-term nature mentoring can help children to thrive and navigate the many stages of their lives. Our mentors help children understand who they are, what their gifts are, and how to bring them to the world. We believe this work is essential to creating a healthier, more connected future.
We achieve our mission through transformative programs that offer long-term nature mentoring year-round, reaching more than 650 people annually in the Newtown, Granby, and Killingworth areas, including summer camp (ages 5-15), weekly school day programs (ages 5-17), caregiver & child programs (ages 0-5), and an adult apprenticeship program (ages 18+).
Over the past year, our programs have expanded at a rapid rate as families recognized that the outdoors were the safest place for their children to learn and socialize while staying healthy during a pandemic. Our Coyote Village School Day program, now in its 14th year, offers students (age 5-17) a full day each week learning while immersed in nature. Our mentors design fluid program days that are responsive to their students’ energy level and interests, which may range from how to craft handmade tools and art projects from natural materials, track animals, identify bird language, make friction fires, build forts and shelters, or forage for wild edibles. Along the way, we leave plenty of free time to play nature games, explore streams, forests, and other unexpected nature mysteries. Woven throughout the day are lessons in peacemaking and conflict resolution, challenge activities, and team projects. Kids go home tired, hungry, dirty, and happy each day.

- Mondays, offered in three sessions (Fall, Winter, Spring) for ages 5-17
- Wednesdays, for the entire school year (Sept-June) for ages 5-12
At Chatfield Hollow State Park in Killingworth, CT:
- Tuesdays, offered in three sessions (Fall, Winter, Spring) for ages 5-16
At Sticks & Stones Farm in Newtown, CT:
- Wednesdays, offered in three sessions (Fall, Winter, Spring) for ages 5-12
- Thursdays, offered in three sessions (Fall, Winter, Spring) for ages 5-17
- Fridays, for the entire school year (Sept-June) for ages 5-12
We are committed to ensuring that Two Coyotes programming is accessible, welcoming, and inclusive of all children and families in Connecticut. Scholarships are available for every program, please request one when you register. Last year we gave away more than $65,000 in scholarships to families with income below the state median. We are also developing new partnerships with other nonprofits, schools, and community groups to reach more diverse and inclusive student populations.
