The Bag Stops Here—What to Know About Our Next Big Step
On June 30, 2025, New Morning Market will take an important step forward in our ongoing sustainability journey: we’re officially eliminating single-use paper bags at checkout.
That means no more large paper grocery bags at the register. Instead, we’re inviting our customers to bring their own reusable bags—or pick one up at checkout at a low shared cost. It’s a simple shift with a big impact.
By making this change, we’ll eliminate an estimated 260,000 single-use bags every year, saving 370 trees and reducing carbon emissions in the process. It’s a move that aligns with our mission—and one that reflects the values we’ve shared with this community for over 50 years.
A Little Bag Goes a Long Way – Kind Chemistry
According to an environmental study by Green Match U.K. it takes 11 uses of a reusable grocery bag made with PET (a type of thermoplastic polymer resin) to offset the environmental impact of the production of the bag. That good news gets even better with bags made with rPET (recycled PET). Companies like 1Bag, who we are partnering with to bring everyday reusable bags to the New Morning Market community, use rPET and are made of 85% post-consumer waste. 1Bags can withstand up to 1,500 uses without tearing and are recyclable once they are no longer useable as a grocery bag.
